This weekend, as we brace ourselves for the arrival of Hurricane Irma, we will also be marking Summit’s 15-year anniversary. When Summit first opened its doors 15 years ago, we were fully committed to being a church that makes an impact in our world. This impact would be felt in both the invitation to spiritual transformation that comes through grace, and the commitment to circumstantial transformation that comes from a humble recognition that the church is to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our world—the tangible expression of Christ’s love.
While celebration plans had been in the works to commemorate Summit’s anniversary, there may not be a more fitting way to mark the occasion than a commitment to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the anticipation and aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Because of the timing and severity of the storm, we have prayerfully decided to cancel all Sunday activities at Summit—worship services, Marriage Prep, Student Ministries, Starter groups, and our 15-Year Celebration. The church is intended to mean something to the world, so let’s roll up our sleeves and intentionally take the church to those in need as we honor what God has done over the last 15 years.
In other words, let’s have our celebration be marked by humble acts of service for those in our community and our church while we help to prepare for and respond to the hurricane.
