The Vivid Kids Concert Benefiting Children's HopeChest
As the Waterford Campus Worship Minister, I have the pleasure of leading a few different bands at the Waterford campus, where there are more than 60 volunteers regularly helping in worship on a weekly basis. There are so many great things I could tell you about each of these wonderful people and what they’ve meant to our community, but today I’m blogging to let you know specifically about one of the bands over here at Waterford. The Vivid Kids are a high-octane contemporary worship group complete with heavy guitars and big vocals. Their sound is full of energy and has an edge to it, but if you ran into one of the volunteers in the band you might not believe this music could come from them. Brian Boyce (Bass), Jeremiah Dunlap (Electric Guitar/Keys), Aubrey Gard (Vocal), Mikaela Johnson (Vocal), Ben O’Riordan (Electric Guitar), and Josue Torres (Drums) for the most part have pretty calm and collected personalities, which shows that this music, though loud and in your face, has a lot of thought behind it.
The band originally started with myself, Jeremiah and Ben getting together with the intention of giving Summit’s congregation a new band with a sound not yet represented in the Summit band bullpen. At the time there were no “rock” bands, so we spent some time thinking about how to make this new sound different and how to make it work in a worship service to best serve the congregation. We wanted to get at the power of God and the oneness we have in Christ. I really love Summit’s creative approach to music because I believe each style of music can highlight different parts of God’s character.
The name “The Vivid Kids” came about after a lot of spit-balling and was finally landed on because we wanted it to be different and stand out. We liked The Vivid Kids as an alternate way of saying “the Children of Light.” We thought it got at both the unifying aspect of what we were trying to do and the energy in the music.
We’re so excited that we finally finished an EP, and we’re doing a CD release on Friday, September 5th at 7 p.m. at the Herndon campus. Tickets are $10 at summitconnect.org and the proceeds go to Children’s HopeChest. We also have the great honor of hosting two other talented bands from other churches in the Orlando area. Our hope in all of this is that God would be glorified and the Summit congregation would be served well as we continue to try to lay down our best gifts and talents in worship.
