Perhaps... I Will Trust God to Do Miraculous Things

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.” —1 Samuel 1:27 There was a season of my life, not all that long ago, when I decided that God was no longer in the business of miracles—at least, He wasn’t doing any for me. We had recently discovered that after years of tears and prayers that God would expand our family, there was a baby on the way, only to experience a painful loss a short time later. I came to the conclusion that our then 4-year-old daughter, even despite her own sweet bedtime prayers, was going to remain an only child. I didn’t understand—I had prayed for this baby daily. Where was my miracle?

In 1 Samuel chapter 1, we read about Hannah. The scripture says that God had closed her womb, and she suffered deep anguish as year after year, she was unable to bear children. Through her grief, she continued to pour out her soul to the Lord, believing that a miracle would happen. And in verse 19, after all those years, it did: “... and the Lord remembered her... in the course of time, Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.”

Have you been waiting for a miracle that sometimes feels as though it may never come? Maybe you’ve been praying for healing... a cure from an illness... a loved one to return... a friend or family member to believe... a child.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” —Romans 8:28 

Today I am grateful to be standing on the other side of my season of disbelief. God brought me through the physical and emotional pain, restored my faith, and gave me peace as I came to trust the plan He had for my life. And when I least expected it, He worked a miracle. She’s rolling around on the floor next to me, sucking her fingers as I sit and write.

Perhaps what God wants is our faith, our trust, our complete surrender that no matter what He has planned for our lives—whether it is the miracle we’ve been praying for or something else—it will be for good, and it will bring Him glory.
