What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the season (about 40 days) leading up to Holy Week, which culminates in the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. It’s a time to reflect, repent of sin, and renew our commitment to Christ.

Whether you decide to participate in Lent by making a daily sacrifice or adding something new to your routine, Ash Wednesday is a time to pause, pray, and commit to making this season one of focusing on Christ and His sacrifice for us on the cross.

What happens at Ash Wednesday service?

This special service begins with prayer, followed by a responsive reading by the leader and the congregation, and a brief message. Each row will then be dismissed one at a time to come down to the front. Those who come forward will have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross; someone will say to them words from Genesis 3:19, “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust;” and they will take communion.

This is followed by a time of worship, quiet confession, and reflection, and then the congregation is quietly dismissed.
