The Church Is
In The Church Is, we looked at the core identity of the Church. This identity was present in the first church described in Acts 2, and has been the identity of every true church since. In order to understand our unique expression as a church, we must first understand our identity as people devoted to God, in community, on mission, for God’s glory.

HERNDON: WEEK 1

Jim Keller
We are all invited to be a vital part of God’s family—we are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of His household—and it matters whether or not we live in that reality. Our devotion to God is what draws us into participation in His family. Citizenship or membership in God’s family is because of what God has done for us, the result of which invites devotion to God and participation is his family.

The Church at its best is not an individual or individuals, but a community. God intended to say something about who He is and what the gospel is through the community that is the Church (In Him the whole building is being joined together…).

God is still at work telling a story of hope and restoration for all of mankind and all of creation. As the Church, we are Plan A for how that story gets told. By being the Church we have a purpose, a mission. (“... rises to become a holy temple in the Lord…”) The temple is no longer a place that draws in the nations to worship God, but is a movement of people sent to the nations to be worshipers who bring light and hope to a dark and hopeless world.

The church is not about what we can accomplish, but what God has accomplished. Our lives are no longer our own and we are no longer alone (a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit). Baptism is a beautiful picture of what it means for God to get the glory in our lives and in this community. In baptism we show that we have died to our old selves, where death reigned, and now live by His power and grace and for His glory. Our new life is in Him just as He is in us.
