Romans
### WEEK 2
June 7, 2015
Jim Keller
This summer, we will be studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week two, Jim walked us through the latter part of Romans chapter 1 and the topic of sin. It is by no means a “light” chapter of Scripture, as in it Paul describes the sinfulness of man—our sinfulness.
We will never comprehend or fully appreciate the unconditional love of God without coming face to face with our own sinfulness. Recognizing our sin is the first step toward wholeness and a life lived in relationship with a holy God.

### WEEK 3
June 14, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. possibly measure up?

### WEEK 4
June 21, 2015
Jim Keller
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week four, Jim led us through what it looks like to live authentically as followers of Christ. Our outward actions don’t make us righteous, no matter how hard we try or how well we follow the rules. We are all in need of a Savior, and it is our hearts that must be changed by the work of His Spirit within us.
This week, we focused on three main concepts:
You can’t claim to be a good teacher if you cannot live out what you teach.
Following the rules is not the same as allowing the rules to change your heart.
The ultimate goal is praise from God, not people.
What would happen if we all stopped pretending, stopped playing a part, and laid down our masks?

### WEEK 5
June 28, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week five, we walked us through Romans 3:9-22. In these verses, Paul addresses the Christians in Rome and levels the playing field by saying that none of us are righteous, none of us understand
God, and none of us do good. Left on our own, we are inadequate, but the hope of the gospel is that “righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” (verse 22).

### WEEK 6
July 5, 2015
Garry Abbott
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week six, we heard from Herndon Campus Pastor Garry Abbott on the topic of worship. Worship is something we’re wired for—God created us this way. But often we choose to worship things, people, and circumstances that are undeserving, and when our worship is misplaced, things not as they should be. The result? We set up ourselves and others for feeling unfulfilled and disappointed. Blaise Pascal, a Christian philosopher from the 1600s, said, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus.” When we worship the only One who is always faithful to us, we will find our worship rightly placed.

WEEK 7
July 12, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week seven, we went through what Paul’s letter to the Romans reveals to us about salvation. What does salvation look like? How do we come to be “saved”? If salvation is by faith, do our good works matter?

WEEK 8
July 19, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week eight, we looked at what the Bible has to say about suffering compared to what the world says about it. Because of the gospel, which proclaims our justification before a Holy God, we have peace. This peace is present in good times as well as times of tremendous suffering. As followers of Christ, how do we respond to suffering? How can our response reveal our true faith? As we hold tight to the truth of the gospel instead of walking away from life’s toughest challenges, we come to better understand the true character of Jesus and find our own character transformed in the process.

WEEK 10
AUGUST 2, 2015
Jim Keller
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week 10, Jim helped us to examine Paul’s question, “Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?”The short answer is an emphatic “Absolutely not!” Through the process of salvation, our relationship with Christ is meant to grow and mature. We are not changed by our church, or our religion, or our theology. We are changed from the inside out through a relationship with the living Christ. And if that relationship is growing as it should, we will treasure the grace we’ve been given and never want to take it for granted.

WEEK 11
AUGUST 9, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week 11, we examined another of Paul’s questions to the Christians living in Rome: If we know we’re already forgiven anyway, should we go on sinning? If we are already covered by God’s grace, does it matter if we sin? As we confront our tendency to take God’s grace, mercy, and forgiveness for granted, we are reminded of the great sacrifice of Christ, who died on the cross in our place... a sacrifice that calls us to a deeper relationship with Him and a renewed commitment to a righteous life. The more we love God, the less we want to sin.

WEEK 12
AUGUST 16, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week 12 of our series, we went through Romans 7:5-14 and how God’s grace changes the way we fight sin. This week, we looked at how we cannot win the battle alone. Next week, we’ll find out how with Christ, we cannot lose.

WEEK 13
AUGUST 23, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week 13, we went through Romans 7:14-25 as we continued to look at how God’s grace changes the way we fight sin. In these verses, Paul reveals three simple steps: admit, ask, and adore. These are not only the steps to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ—we can continue to use these steps as a guide every time we battle with sin.

WEEK 14
AUGUST 30, 2015
This summer, we’re studying the first eight chapters of Romans in a series led by both of our teaching ministers. In week 14, we considered the concept of freedom in the context of Romans chapter 8. Paul’s letter to the Romans tells us that there is freedom in Christ... But what exactly does this mean for us? What has Christ set us free from? And more importantly, what has He set us free for?
