Money. Sex. Power.
What did God intend for us when He created these appealing and often all-consuming things that compete for the affections of our heart? There is destruction when money, sex, and power become the object of our devotion. But when they are rightly seen as blessings from the One who is worthy of our devotion, there is great beauty.
Over the next six weeks, we’ll see what misplaced devotion can look like and do to us, but also what could happen in and through us if we were radically devoted to rightness.
WEEK 1
February 14, 2016
John Parker
Misplaced devotion starts when we are tempted by the blessings of God apart from God himself. This week we looked at money and how it, when not rightly understood, can compete for our devotion. How we answer several important questions about money— Whose is it? What can it do for me? What can’t it do for me? What does it say about me?— tells us a lot about where our devotion lies.

As we continue looking at how money can affect our devotion to God, we look at how when our perspective is aligned with God’s, money doesn’t have to be a source of worry and distance from God. In this week’s passage from Luke, God tells us not to worry about material things— not because our worries are too big for God to combat, or too small for Him to care about, but because we will not have to walk through them alone.

WEEK 3
February 28, 2016
In our third week of the Money. Sex. Power. series, we look at how lies about sex can effect each of us. Sex is good and holy, but oftentimes shame messes it up so we become disconnected from ourselves, others, and our Creator. How do we pursue holiness and not ignore the richness of our sexual desires? How can our sexual struggles actually take us into deeper relationship with God?

WEEK 4
March 6th, 2016
God gave us sex as a way to please Him, to continue creation, to experience joy, as a response to our loneliness, and a taste of what is come. For a man and a woman, who are utterly committed to one another within marriage, sex is a way to be fully known and loved- a foretaste of what it means to be known, loved, and unified to God himself. That’s why God wants us to protect it.

WEEK 5
March 13th, 2016
Jim Keller
Great thinkers in every age have warned against the misuse of power, and its ability to corrupt us. Their warnings aren’t just for those in positions of political or religious power, but for all of us in our desire for influence and control. This week, Jim walks us through Jesus’ teaching on power, and its tempting claims of superiority, control, and entitlement.

WEEK 6
March 20th, 2016
Jim Keller
In the last week of our Money. Sex. Power. series, we turn to Jesus’ teaching on power done right, and learn what our posture toward power should be when our hearts are fully devoted to God. Through Jesus’ words and actions, we see that power handled rightly always involves humility and sacrifice.
