Helping Others Find Healing at reGROUP

reGROUP_blog.jpg

When I became a reGROUP leader in 2008, I had my doubts about whether or not I had the skills to do it well. reGROUP was just starting at Summit, and a lot of things were still getting figured out—like training. My training going into it was that I had walked through the material as a participant. This was because I needed it for myself, not because I was training to become a leader. Even after completing the process, I felt like I had just scratched the surface, and like I still had a lot of work to do (and I did).

But I did have a desire for others to experience what I had through the material, and a willingness to help in whatever way I could. What I wanted most for people to know and experience through the reGROUP process was that God has the power to change lives and break cycles and patterns of behavior that seem unbreakable or impossible to change. I felt like all the other leaders had that same desire and willingness, because they had experienced it for themselves as well.

More importantly, we knew that God is in the business of seeking and saving that which has been lost (Luke 19:10), and that ultimately, this was His work and we were merely joining Him in it. The reGROUP material is there to provide a way to discover the freedom and fullness of life that God offers. The leaders are there to help guide in the process, speak from personal experience, and ultimately, point to God and what He can do.

While no one can be completely prepared to be a reGROUP leader, the training process will take your desire and willingness and equip you to lead a group well. It has come a long way since reGROUP started. If this is something that interests you, I would encourage you to look into it more by attending one of the upcoming leader interest meetings.

Want to help others work toward healing and restoration? Do you fit into one or more of the following categories?

1. I’m a counseling student.

2. I’ve had a successful 12-step experience.

3. I’m a mature Christian willing to participate in an accelerated version of reGROUP to prepare me for group leadership.

If any of these describe you, join us for a reGROUP leader interest meeting on Monday, August 25th at 7 p.m. at Herndon or Tuesday, August 26th at 7 p.m. at Waterford. For more info, visit summitconnect.org.
