Just Showing Up

I use to not really like kids. (If you think you’ve accidently clicked on the wrong blog post, you didn’t. This is, in fact, for Team Summer!) I mean, they were fine to be around and I was super glad that other people had them, but when they were in my care, I had no idea what to do. So when a friend asked me if I wanted to join Team Summer in 2012, my gut reaction was “Ummm, no.” But, she asked me to think about it and I told her I would. Truly and Irrevocably

Stepping into that neon green, loud classroom for the first time was a little overwhelming. Kids were laughing and yelling—some playing at the air hockey table, while smaller groups gathered around the foosball table or played board games on the floor. I was told that I could just observe what happened in The Lodge, and not to feel pressured to participate in discussions. So I kept my distance and watched as fourth and fifth graders danced to songs, played silly games, and learned about Jesus.

I never cared to do anything at church beyond attend and occasionally play with the worship team. I grew up as a pastor’s kid with a ton of siblings (9 to be exact), and had about all the “behind the scenes”  experience I could handle. When I was younger, my family would be in church any time the doors were open.

Link Arms

There’s something I’ve seen starting to take shape at Summit that I wish everyone who attends or even works at Summit could see. I’m almost certainly just getting a small glimpse of it, but what I’m talking about is the collective effect of someone giving their time and talents in multiple ministries within the church.
