Whom Angels Greet

To announce the long-expected, promised, and holy arrival of Jesus, God communicated by sending His heavenly and exceptional messengers: angels.

Through four distinct visits, these angels brought messages of promise, proclamation, protection, and praise. As we prepare for the Messiah’s arrival in joyful anticipation, we look to the Angels of the Lord and echo their joyous strains—a Savior has come. God is with us indeed!

WEEK 1

December 6, 2015

Jim Keller

Advent is Latin for “coming,” and in our Advent series, Whom Angels Greet, we’ll be looking at the angelic encounters that preceded Christ’s coming into the world. In this first week, we see God’s goodness displayed through the fulfillment of a promise and answered prayer. Like Zechariah, the coming of Christmas gives us a voice of praise. Embedded in God’s love is a promise, the sending of a son, our Savior, Christ the Lord.

WEEK 2

In our second week of our series Whom Angels Greet, the angel Gabriel is once again sent by God, this time to a teenage girl — a girl without wealth, power or stature. The angel came with good news declaring that this young girl would have the unique privilege of bearing and nurturing the Messiah. Through this, we see that Christmas is a time of proclamation. God’s exceptional and supernatural communication to Mary was one of good news for all generations: God is with us.

WEEK 3

December 20, 2015

As we continue our Advent series, we turn our attention to the angel’s visits to Joseph both before and shortly after the birth of Jesus. Both visits are reminders that God is trustworthy in the midst of uncertainty; He is the one who protects us and keeps us safe. Joseph trusted God and was obedient. He didn’t wait for certainty— he moved when God said move.
